“As far as my work is concerned I am convinced that it must be THIS for me – for you of course again a little different – that is the beauty of the neoplasticism, there is room for diversity “
(Quote from Piet Mondrian to Theo van Doesburg 10 September 1917)
In Mondriaan en Steiner – wegen naar Nieuwe Beelding wordt het werk van Piet In Mondriaan and Steiner – Roads to Neoplasticism, the work of Piet Mondriaan is viewed from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner. This esoteric source has so far been practically neglected in art-historical publications about Mondriaan.
For this publication, Mondriaan’s bundle of transcriptions of the nominations from Steiner held in 1908 in the Netherlands, and part of the Mondrian succession, was used. Important is that Mondriaan did not only cherish Steiners nominations, he also provide them with pencil mark.
In terms of research these lectures are linked to Mondriaan’s creative quest for abstraction, resulting in surprisingly new insights. Little by little he made visible how he gave the universal process an individual expression.
