How to transcend mediocrity
Three-star restaurant De Librije opens its doors as a ‘learning centre’. Shovel on and find out how you, as an organization can transcend mediocrity and how you can reach and retain the highest level. ‘Boerenwijsheden’ (Peasant Wisdom), is based on the seven flavours of De Librije. Each flavour explains something about the leadership of Jonnie and Thérèse Boer and how to build a high performance organization.
Jonnie and Thérèse Boer run one of the most prominent high performance organizations in the Netherlands. Tjeerd den Boer and Niels van Rees discovered their restaurant as ‘learning centre’ and wrote a unique book about it. They go from practice to theory and unravel all their practices of 25 years of entrepreneurship at the highest level to ‘Boerenwijsheden’ (Peasantry Wisdom). ‘Boerenwijsheden’ serves tasteful kitchen secrets and hands-on experience from De Librije. How it responds is discussed in the seven flavours that Jonnie and Thérèse work with daily. Taste is compared with behaviour and the book gives practical peasantry wisdom to use itself. A manual about common sense. Immediately comprehensible, well-memorized and universally deployable within every organization and for every manager.
First we start a conversation with the tastemakers of De Librije. We disentangle the thoughts and experiences of Jonnie and Thérèse based of the seven Librije flavours: sweet, salt, sour, bitter, umami, fat and 3D. A metaphor to describe the behaviour that leads to success. We translate the flavours into tasteful management lessons.
Deployable within any organization
and easy to implement by each supervisor.
Not a typical management book with a correct scientific framework, but 25 years of peasantry wisdom that has proven itself in a high performance organization. To understand the exceptional performance, you have to taste and experience the atmosphere behind the scenes of De Librije. ‘Boerenwijsheden’ brings you closer than ever.
Jonnie and Thérèse Boer have been running a culinary empire for over 25 years, based on their ‘cuisine pure’. De Librije is one of the 28 restaurants in the world with three Michelin stars for a consecutive period of more than 10 years. It’s worth the effort to meet the couple and learn more about them. They complement each other in many areas. Jonnie runs the kitchen, Thérèse is managing the ‘White Brigade’. He is pioneering and inventive and although he preferably remains in the back, he is not opposed to firm statements. She is extravert and performs in a guiding and human-centred way. They know each other’s strengths and limitations. As a duo, they represent the solid foundation of their company. Both are the key players and tastemakers in ‘Boerenwijsheden’.
A good book is one to devour. It starts at appearance, just like a delicious, mouth-watering dish. ‘Boerenwijsheden’ is exquisitely crafted and carefully thought out. The layered design already has something of surprising, narrative and immersive content. To understand the art of a high performance organization you have to go through all the layers. And that is what ‘Boerenwijsheden’ exactly does. In word and experience.
