Emil van Slooten (1917 - 2009) used to be the leading oncological surgeon in our country. But that was not the only thing he was known for. He was also a visual artist of great stature.

The striking art of Emil van Slooten

His ‘little prints’ are fascinating. The funny sketches, for example, on notes to employees, where the illustrated content of the communicated message is spot-on. And the slides accompanying his speeches, both on official occasions and at parties and celebrations, are tiny masterpieces.

Emil's paintings, in contrast to his prints, are less playful, but no less striking. The portraits not only show how well he observed, they also reveal a sensitive bond with his patients. In his ceramic work we often see his sparkling humour again.

A few former colleagues and admirers have collected some of his art to prevent his life's work from being underexposed and forgotten. This has led to the book 'Arts and Crafts', where we can see an overview of Emil's work and get a glimpse into the special world of a hospital at the time.
