What is it like to grow up with a mixed background? In 'Uit de wereld’ (Out of this world), twenty-five young adults from mixed backgrounds give an insight into their lives, in which pride and a sense of enrichment go hand in hand with doubt and uncertainty.
Albert de Leeuw and Yvonne Zoethout themselves grew up in mixed backgrounds and regularly faced identity confusion. As they grew older, they met more and more people from mixed backgrounds and realised they’re part of a large group of people. And yet the topic is rarely discussed.
Not only Albert and Yvonne felt the need to share their story with the world, but they decided to compile the personal stories of the people they spoke to combined with vulnerable portrait photos in a book. In this way, Albert and Yvonne hope to contribute to creating a place of recognition, acknowledgement and the formation of a positive self-image in the search for identity.
