Traffic signs, gear shift knobs and cassette tapes, in themselves they are everyday objects. But in Sjimmie Veenhuis’ installations, they are building blocks that are given a whole new meaning. With geometric precision, Sjimmie creates abstract compositions in which the objects transcend themselves and undergo the ultimate transformation. This results in works of art that invite us to re-examine our own material environment with a typical 'Veenhuis' view.
‘Aspect ratio' offers a retrospective of Sjimmie's work and is at the same time a prelude to its continuation. His complete artwork to date is presented in this publication and linked to substantive motivations and meaning.
The twenty-four unique limited editions of 'Aspect ratio' together form one artwork. All owners of this edition own a part of a larger whole. Especially for the limited edition, Sjimmie developed a beautiful wooden box that can be opened on two sides. The book and two rolls of warning tape are stored inside the box. At the same time, the box forms the frame for the artwork that is attached on the front of the box. The box can be put down or hung up.
